AI Literacy and Critical Inquiry: Building Critical Thinking in LBS Learning
Session Description:
AI is now part of everyday life, from résumé builders to translation tools, and many adult learners are already using it. In Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) programs, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. How can we help learners move beyond passive use of AI to become thoughtful, critical users?
This session explores how AI can support, not replace, critical thinking and engagement in LBS instruction. Participants will discover practical ways to guide learners in questioning AI outputs, recognizing bias, and comparing results with their own knowledge and experience.
By integrating AI into literacy learning with purpose, educators can strengthen digital literacy, promote inquiry, and deepen comprehension. Together, we’ll reimagine AI as a thinking partner that enhances reflection, creativity, and confidence.
Key takeaways:
Practical strategies to build critical thinking through AI use
Approaches to engage learners as active, reflective participants
Insights on using AI to support equitable, meaningful learning in LBS
Date: November 5, 2025
